Chapter 19

Things started to dramatically heat up between Camille and Lydia. It seemed like every day they were in disagreement about something. Camille felt Lydia had set her up to look incompetent. A partner of the firm, Mr. Allen, had called down and requested a file to be brought up to him. Lydia had taken the request after Camille stepped away from her desk. Camille didn’t find out about Mr. Allen’s request until almost an hour later when he called again inquiring about it. Mr. Allen told Lydia that his clients were in his office and needed to see their estate planning file right away. A portion of the file was inside a safe only Camille and Mrs. Welch knew the combination to.

Camille tried explaining to Mr. Allen that she was unaware of his request and he abruptly hung up on her.

“You forgot!” Camille shouted at Lydia. “How could you have forgotten when you leave messages you don’t want to carry out on my desk. What, did my desk temporarily disappear?”

“Don’t be shouting at me! I am not a child. And, for your information, people do forget to give people messages. So you may as well grin and bear it.” Lydia rolled her eyes, then turned on her stool and began to sort some papers.

“Grin and bear it!” Camille said. She balled her mouth and snarled, “Skank, I will do some damage to you. You’re screwing around with somebody that will hurt your mama.”

Rosemary looked over her shoulder at Camille balling her fist up as an indication she would knock Lydia out.

Lydia swung around on the stool, offended by Camille’s remark.

“Are you threatening me, because this is the second time you’ve made one against me? And I don’t take threats lightly.”

“Believe me,” Camille said with a burning glare. “It won’t come lightly. And if I were you, I’d swing my bones right back around on that stool.”

“I’m not scared of you!” Lydia shouted.

“Well, you should be, because I’ll sneak up on you like Linda Blair.” Camille had her eyes narrowed, almost shut, at Lydia.

“What? What you need to do is stop trying to act like my boss.” Lydia jumped off the stool and briskly walked out of the file room, and in the direction of Mrs. Welch’s office. She didn’t want Camille to see how frightened she really was of her.

Mrs. Welch, after getting word of their quarrel, waited a couple of days before confronting Camille. She knew with Camille’s highly praised work record that she would be setting the firm up for a lawsuit if she fired Camille. She felt Camille would deny the accusation. And after questioning Rosemary, she testified that she’d heard them talking loudly, but didn’t remember a threat being made. And it didn’t help that Lydia had a reputation of being an idler. Mrs. Welch was sure Lydia’s lazy bones were what led to their dispute. So she would wait and see if Camille and Lydia’s words or war would escalate which they didn’t, but she had no intentions of letting their dispute go unresolved.
